Garage Door Troubleshooting

Problem #1: Unresponsive Remote

Why does this always seem to happen when you are running late? An unresponsive remote is probably the most common garage door problem. However, it is often the easiest to fix as well. Garage door troubleshooting #1.

Step 1: check the batteries. This may seem obvious, but you will be surprised how often people forget to change the battery. If after replacing the batteries the remote still does not work, it may be damaged. Try reprogramming it or checking the power source (see step 2).

Step 2: check the power source. Make sure the motor is plugged into a working outlet. Sometimes a power outage or a circuit breaker can trip the outlet into which your motor is plugged. Often this will fix the problem. If your remote is still unresponsive, you may need to buy a new one.

Problem # 2: The Garage Door Jams or Does Not Close Completely

Another common garage door problem is jamming. A door that will not close completely is not only a nuisance but also a security issue. The last thing you want is to allow strangers access to your garage and home. A semi-open garage door also lets in cold air and is responsible for a considerable loss of energy. Thus, it is important that you fix this problem as soon as possible.

This may occur when your garage door opener is damaged. Or your operating system may need repair. First, check the sensor to make sure nothing is obstructing the door. Second, check the garage door opener to see if any lights are blinking. If there are blinking lights, refer to the user manual as you will likely be able to diagnose what is wrong.

Problem # 3: Reverse Sensors Are Blocked

Almost all doors are equipped with reverse sensors for your safety. These sensors are located on either side of the door. If an object passes through them when the door is closing, the garage door will automatically rise. The number one cause of this problem is obstacles. Make sure nothing is in the way, including dust, dirt, and other debris.

Problem # 4: Garage Door Motor Is Constantly Running

This is a seriously frustrating problem. If your garage door opener motor is constantly running, chances are it is making a lot of noise and driving you crazy. To fix this problem, you may need to adjust your limit switch. For safety reasons, we recommend calling in a repairman to make limit and force adjustments.

Problem # 5: Squealing

Noisy garage doors can be annoying. Squealing, squeaking and other harsh sounds are typically not major problems. Rather they are simply caused by worn rollers, parts that need to be lubricated or loose hardware. You may also need new anti-vibration pads. These are all simple fixes and should be part of your regular garage door maintenance routine.
